Santorini
A drowned volcano ringed by cliff villages, where the whole island tilts west to watch the sun go down. Santorini earns its reputation — the trick is knowing which hour, and which village, to spend it in.

The place
What Santorini is actually like
Santorini is the southern rim of a caldera that collapsed some three and a half thousand years ago. What survived is a crescent of cliffs three hundred metres above the water, with villages spilling down them in whitewashed terraces. The drama is real, and so are the crowds — but the island is bigger and quieter than its Instagram reputation suggests.
Fira is the capital and the transport hub; Oia is the postcard; Imerovigli sits between them on the highest point of the caldera with the best balance of view and calm. The eastern side of the island — Kamari, Perissa, Vlychada — has the black volcanic beaches, better value, and almost none of the cruise-ship traffic.
The wine deserves more attention than it gets. Assyrtiko grown in basket-woven vines low to the volcanic soil produces something mineral and bone-dry that tastes like nowhere else. Half a day in the Megalochori vineyards is the best antidote to caldera fatigue.

Practicalities
Things worth knowing
Do not hire a car for the whole stay
Caldera villages are pedestrian and parking is brutal. Hire for two days to see the south and east, and use buses or taxis otherwise.
Book sunset dinner a week ahead
Every west-facing table in Oia and Imerovigli is spoken for in summer. Reserve before you fly.
Cruise days are predictable
Check the port schedule. On three-ship days, Oia between 10am and 4pm is not worth attempting.
Cave suites are cooler than they look
Traditional yposkafa are carved into the rock and stay naturally cool — but many have no windows. Check before booking if that matters to you.

Questions
Santorini FAQ
How many days do you need in Santorini?
Three full days covers the caldera villages, a boat trip and the vineyards without rushing. Five lets you add the eastern beaches and Akrotiri at a genuinely relaxed pace.
Is Santorini expensive?
The caldera-facing hotels are among the most expensive in Greece, particularly July and August. Staying in Fira, Kamari or Vlychada typically halves the nightly rate, and the island is small enough that you lose very little.
Which is better, Oia or Fira?
Oia is more beautiful and much quieter after dark; Fira is more practical, better connected and better value. Imerovigli sits between the two and is the choice of most repeat visitors.
When is the sea warm enough to swim?
Mid-June through late October. September is reliably the warmest water of the year, at around 25°C.
